I believe it’s because although 6 and 7 are optional levels, 8, 9, and 10 have a larger variety of skills gymnasts compete where as in 6 and 7, gymnasts more or less have the same routine with different choreography and different music on floor

Is is too late to start gymnastics? I am 11 years old and feel I am starting too late. I have quite a few tumbling skills but am not the best on bar and am okay on beam but I have not even tried the vault yet. Here are the skills I can do,
    Floor:
    Cartwheel
    Round-off
    Handstand (3-5 seconds)
Splits (left, right, and almost middle)
    Tuck Jump
    Pike Jump
    Straddle Jump
    Split Leap (almost)
    Front Walkover
    Back Walkover
Front Handspring (I need to work on the landing)
    Backbend
    Backbend Kickover
(I don’t know if this counts but I can do a back handspring on the trampoline with a spot)
etc. (I forgot some of the rest)

    Bar:
Pullup and Chinup (I know this is not a skill, I just thought to include it)
    Pullover
    Back Hip Circle
    Cast
    Forward Mill Circle
    Underswing Dismount
    Squat On
(I know another dismount but have forgotten the name)

    Beam:
    Arabesque
    Cartwheel
    Full Turn
    Side Handstand Dismount
    Handstand
    Roundoff Dismount
    Straddle and Pike Dismount
    Staddle Jump
    Pike Jump
    Leap
    Split Jump
etc. (I also forgot some as well)

I am not sure if I should take classes, and I was hoping to join a team, but I know that I am too low leveled for my age. Could you please respond because I am worried that I will not be allowed to have a class.

I don’t think you’re starting to early. I’m planning to start now and I’m a couple of years older than you. Also, I have fewer skills than you. I’m not sure if it would be the best option to take classes. It may be easier to be an at-home gymnast. It’s great if you have a friend or family member who can help spot you. Also, you can find many websites and videos that can teach you. I’m not a professional though. So take my advice if you want, or you can seek help from someone with more experience.

i don’t think you’re starting too early or low leveled for your age at all, i am around your age and on a team, and lots of girls on my team don’t have some of the skills you do! i think joining a team sounds like a good idea if it works for you and your family 🙂

i definitely don’t think you’re starting too early or low leveled for your age. i am around your age and on a team (xcel silver) and most of the girls on my team can’t do some of the skills you mentioned! i think joining a team is a great idea if it works for you and your family. depending on what gyms are around you, you could be a JO level 2 or 3, or Xcel Bronze or Silver 🙂

I think you are good at bar and floor. Beam is not too bad.
Well I personally think that the earlier the better. (I started when I was 7)
      Good luck!
      I hope this information helps.

Has anyone purchased the $19.99 Skills Progressions Checklist from Gymnastics HQ? Is the content exactly the same as if I compiled their free Skills Checklists?

Specifically, I want to know whether the fancy checklist just says “4 A value skills” for Bronze Level bars or whether it specifies exactly what those skills can be.

A screenshot of the bars area of the fancy checklist would be really helpful. There doesn’t seem to be any way to contact Gymnastics HQ directly with these questions, and I don’t want to waste $20 if the fancy checklist is not what I want. Thanks so much!

Hi – our Skills Progressions Checklists do have the actual skills listed for each event. It is more detailed with the specific information of the skills for each level vs our free one does not have this information. For example, where the free one might say 4 A value skills, the paid one will tell you what the 4 A value skill options are. You can always further contact us at mailto:gymnasticshq@gmail.com

Wow, it’s really changed. I competed levels 1-3, and those elements I was doing and working on are in levels 4-8 now. Level 1 required roundoff back handspring and a full turn on floor (plus a much more connected dance sequence), to music, plus a half turn on beam and stag leap. At level 3 I was working on back layout fulls for floor and bars dismount, giants, and back handsprings on beam.

It’s so strange to see the shift.
