I made it once before and it just didn’t turn out right, but we didn’t have cream of tartar either. and I can get 5 play doh packs at the store for like $1.60 or something so it’s pretty cheap here. But great tutorial and I love the colors.

Why not add the food colour before mixing it on the stove? Thats how I’ve always done it, and it eliminates the need for gloves or kneading…

Oh how fun! What a neat idea to do with the kids! I love how you can make your own colors…and would be so fun to mix then up too! Would be good teaching mixing colors too!

My mom used to make me playdough when I was a kid! She would put vanilla extract or some other extract in it to make it smell pretty.

I love playdough! Loved it as a child and still love it today — would love to make this with my young cousins for a fam get together. Haha they’d probably smash this stuff in each other’s hair but hey– that’s youth for ya!

Oh my gosh, this looks like a blast! My kids always leave the playdough out and it gets hard, so this is a great way to give them something to make and then play with too!

how to make the world's best homemade play-doh. You'll need 3 cups of white all-purpose flour, 2 tablespoons cream of tartar, 1 cup + 2 tablespoons of table salt, 3-4 tablespoons of any cooking oil (start with 3 and add more if necessary), 3 cups HOT water, and food coloring.
Instructions. Place the cornstarch in a large bowl. Mix in the hair conditioner with your hands--it will just start coming together and it will be pliable and very, very smooth. If desired, add a drop or two or food coloring.
While cream of tartar is not an ingredient you probably keep on hand in your kitchen, it is worth the investment if you are trying to become a playdough making pro. Cream of tartar really helps to get your playdough to the fun gel form and prevent it from staying too wet.
Cream of tartar– gives the dough it's body and texture. A little makes the dough soft and stretchy, add a bit more, and the Makes the dough soft and stretchy as opposed to soft and crumbly. Vegetable oil- Keep the dough moisturized, so it doesn't dry out as quickly.
*2 tablespoons food-grade vegetable glycerin (if you don't have any on hand, it's worth ordering some from Amazon. In addition to being the secret ingredient to silky play dough, it's also the secret ingredient for making cheap but fun bubble solution for sunny days, too!)
(Pure white – hardens quickly) 1 cup cornstarch 2 cups baking soda 1 ½ cups cold water Combine all ingredients. Stir until smooth. Cook over medium heat until it reaches the consistency of dry mashed potatoes.
