Is Reddit mainly for nerdy white guys? (2024)

That's the impression I get. Am I wrong?

Depends entirely on the subreddit. As a proportion of all Reddit users, yes, probably. Though I've been active in subs where they were in the minority.

by Anonymousreply 1November 30, 2019 8:59 PM

Yes.

by Anonymousreply 2November 30, 2019 9:02 PM

It is mainly a place to post (supposedly) cool stories about drugs.

by Anonymousreply 3November 30, 2019 9:03 PM

The few subs I was interested in were mainly sexist, hom*ophobic libertarian white dudes who embraced some form of 'red pill' BS. Really toxic place although friends have found some good subs. A friends who is a recovering alcoholic spends a lot of time on a subreddit and another friend who was struggling with his uber religious upbringing found a very supportive sub for ex-Christians. A straight guy I worked with posted meal prep tips and instructions. The picture had his wife's back and his kid's little toy visible in some pictures and he got the most hateful, misogynistic obscene messages about his wife and kid that he had to delete his account. So YMMV.

by Anonymousreply 4November 30, 2019 9:06 PM

Some hot guys post in the various "X Gone Wild" and "Massive co*ck" subreddits.

by Anonymousreply 5November 30, 2019 9:17 PM

It's for white guys, period.

by Anonymousreply 6November 30, 2019 9:18 PM

What R5 said. If you look at the gone wild subreddits you can see some hot guys and co*ck.

by Anonymousreply 7November 30, 2019 9:21 PM

Reddit is for dumb suburban white trash . They are usually solidly middle class and make decent money but they are just stupid trash to their core.

by Anonymousreply 8November 30, 2019 9:24 PM

No it’s not, r6.

But it IS the only major social media forum that’s predominantly male. IG, Twitter, Facebook, etc users are all majority female.

by Anonymousreply 9November 30, 2019 9:24 PM

I follow a number of subreddits and guess I haven't noticed. People will use whatever platform that works for them.

by Anonymousreply 10November 30, 2019 9:38 PM

I stopped going to Reddit after discovering Datalounge. Don't know why

by Anonymousreply 11November 30, 2019 9:42 PM

Aside from the hot pics of co*ck on a few subreddits, its Incel Central

by Anonymousreply 12November 30, 2019 9:46 PM

White, suburban, Millennial, Libertarian, red pill dudes. And half of them are incels on top of it.

by Anonymousreply 13December 1, 2019 5:14 AM

Sounds like they need to have some mental stimulation, time away from their pudding-headed wife/girlfriend.

by Anonymousreply 14December 1, 2019 5:51 AM

Usually it’s cats and politics with a few infobits of tech sh*t. I haven’t noticed gender and the p*rn is stale.

Nerdy, shallow, morally self-righteous urban white guys who overestimate their own intellect and expertise, yes.

By the way, I'm pretty sure nerdy or at least nerd-adjacent white guys age 18-50 are probably the main cohort on the Internet at large, not just on Reddit.

by Anonymousreply 17December 1, 2019 11:55 AM

SMH

Totally depends on the sub

Some (scrapbooking) are frau central

Others can be primarily POC because they are about black-related topics

But the sex ones are mostly as you describe

The lgbt sub-reddit would make DL explode. It’s 98% selfies of trans who’ve had a haircut or bought a new dress.

There's a datalounge subreddit, fwiw. Though it's not particularly active, and I doubt it's "official" or moderated by the owner(s) of this site.

R21 Some of the subreddits are discussed here. They were also discussed in the David Eego thread.

The way they do url addresses on the site can be weird so if you want to find something initially just google Reddit and the name of the subreddit listed.

Some subs attract more of the Tumblr SJW crowd. Some skew older. Really just depends where your interests lie. I'm not into nerdy stuff as a rule and there are plenty of subs that I enjoy. Obviously you aren't going to find any online forum where everyone is cool and nobody ever annoys you. That's true of DL as well.

by Anonymousreply 32December 2, 2019 2:07 PM

R32 f*ck off.

Hit a nerve, R33?

by Anonymousreply 35December 2, 2019 2:35 PM

Reddit is home to incels ‘round the world. Posters are generally really stupid.

by Anonymousreply 36December 2, 2019 2:40 PM

The askagaybro reddit was funny. Can't look at it anymore somehow.

by Anonymousreply 37December 2, 2019 2:59 PM

Most of the main pages and subreddits are posters who are young teens. You have to get into the smaller or more specific subreddits to find the adults. The teens are pretty obnoxious and developmentally immature.

by Anonymousreply 38December 2, 2019 3:43 PM

I frequent it a lot. There's something for everybody there, really - you just need to search around and find some subreddit's you like. They have a great horror subreddit, and their Walking Dead/Fear The Walking Dead subreddits are very active. The Excel subreddit is very useful for my work. The cooking subreddits are also very active. Of course there's some really funny ones too, like AnimalsBeingJerks and ObviousPlant.

by Anonymousreply 39December 2, 2019 4:57 PM

You have to tone your DL-nature way down when on Reddit. They don't appreciate it. It's like everyone on Reddit is a Millennial or Canadian in demeanor-- they're so 'innocent' and easily taken-aback by anything remotely assertive.

by Anonymousreply 40December 2, 2019 6:10 PM

R40 Yes I've noticed that you can't be a little playfully c*nty without hordes of hypersensitive commenters downvoting you. It's quite dreary.

by Anonymousreply 41December 2, 2019 7:18 PM

Subreddits for cities/towns seem to attract pretty "normal" folks. It's a good place to get immediate information about traffic, accidents, l crime activity, what's going on around town, recommendations for goods and services, lost animals, you name it. It's a nice alternative to NextDoor which can get really screechy at times.

by Anonymousreply 42December 2, 2019 7:27 PM

i always see on my front page posts like “we men have feelings too!1!1!1!! “!

I feel like Reddit is heavily populated by teenagers.

by Anonymousreply 45December 3, 2019 4:21 AM

Not the Aldi sub, R45. It's populated by easily impressed 30 year olds who think everything in the Aldi freezer case is A M A Z I N G and the jars of Korma are "just like the Indian restaurant."

by Anonymousreply 46December 3, 2019 4:29 AM

A lot of those "I'm straight, but I want to f*ck my gay friend" stories seem to originate from there, as well as "closeted gay actor wants advice" discussions.

by Anonymousreply 47December 3, 2019 4:37 AM

I browsed a few forums and felt like everyone was at least 10 years younger than me (I'm 36). Not that there's anything wrong with that, but I definitely lost the script in terms of the popular references, etc.

by Anonymousreply 48December 3, 2019 5:33 AM

R48 There are a lot of young teens. I was in a brief back and forth with someone who couldn't hold their side of the debate and when I clicked on his username and looked at post posts, I realized he was 13! From their demographic survey, 70% of reddit users are under the age of 25.

by Anonymousreply 49December 3, 2019 5:40 AM

Have to disagree that it depends on the subreddit. I don't go much but visited some of the big humor subreddits last week and the entire comment section was overwhelmed with straight young disaffected white assholes. There was just tons of hate for gays, kids, women, anyone not white, the poor, etc.

And the top comments sounded like propaganda because they all started like this: "I know everyone is going to disagree with me but I ask you to please just read what I say before downvoting me" and they would proceed to rant for 5 paragraphs about some stereotype, then get thousands of likes. They were the mainstream opinion but they were presenting themselves as the oppressed everyman just tellin' it like it is.

Very creepy sh*t going down on Reddit.

by Anonymousreply 50December 3, 2019 5:42 AM

[quote]A straight guy I worked with posted meal prep tips and instructions. The picture had his wife's back and his kid's little toy visible in some pictures and he got the most hateful, misogynistic obscene messages about his wife and kid that he had to delete his account.

Horrifying but not surprising. One long comment thread that made me log off was about three dozen guys saying that who cares if babies get raped as long as there is no physical damage, they won't remember it anyway. It was in AITA which gets tens of thousands of visitors a day and no one said a thing about it.

by Anonymousreply 51December 3, 2019 5:45 AM

R49, that makes sense now! Most of the breadth of their knowledge/interests didn't seem to go further back than 5 to 10 years back. No wonder Reddit makes me feel old.🤣 I'd rather be somewhat young here amongst posters who have more interesting stories and perspectives.

by Anonymousreply 52December 3, 2019 5:58 AM

The most frustrating thing about reddit is that the biggest morons on there are the most aggressive posters. Any time I've posted about my field or my area of expertise, someone who clearly knows nothing comes by and tells me how I'm wrong or how I need to cite my sources (my sources were my f*cking PhD advisors).

I've completely stopped posting in any subreddit EXCEPT for one somewhat hilarious sub that is a parody gay sub (gaybroscirclejerk). It's like the last non-PC non-SJW place on the entire platform, with regard to gay things. The posters there are also genuinely funny, not "reddit funny" by citing memes and in-jokes and banal crap.

If you visit this sub - just realize EVERYTHING is sarcastic. They still say "GRIDS" and so on (and there are openly poz people doing it) - for example... and even the mod who is black talks about how great white co*ck is and only white gays should have sex and reproduce (actually, he didn't say that but it's been said...to satirize the gay communities racial issues) ... it's just a ridiculous hilarious diversion in general.

r/lgbt is unintentionally hilarious/troubling. It's all trans teenagers looking for attention and egging each other on.

"I DID IT YALL I bought my first ever pair of heels. I’m trans MtF and not passing in anyway yet, so I was a little nervous, BUT I DID IT!"

^^^ this is a real post that got 160 upvotes

by Anonymousreply 54December 3, 2019 6:55 AM

The LGBT sub has been mostly T for a long time. It's bizarre. There are Trans subs, dedicated to that.... but they took over LGBT it seems. It was always an odd sub in the early days too though. Someone starter r/ainbow but it didn't catch on as much as the ridiculous "gaybros" sub...which is hardly "bros" at all. It's now the default gay male sub, though it's not about "Gear grub and guns" as they tried to make it when they started.

by Anonymousreply 57December 3, 2019 9:18 AM

[quote]Have to disagree that it depends on the subreddit.

How can you disagree with a cold, hard fact? I was *very* active in the BBUK subreddit for the final season, it was a small community, and it was just gay guys and fraus. Same for another smaller British reality show subreddit I was a part of. Same for the Outlander subreddit. Mostly same for the Sex Education (TV show) subreddit. You just have to know how to pick them.

And even where nerdy white guys are in the majority - like in the official Trek subreddit - they're a pretty delightful bunch. And even there, you make a gay reference and the gay Trekkies will pipe up to show their appreciation.

by Anonymousreply 58December 3, 2019 11:00 AM

I joined a couple of subreddits of television shows I liked and every one of them had every other post some stupid artwork some deluded teenager had made.

by Anonymousreply 59December 3, 2019 11:05 AM

R11 because you can be a critical bitch on here as much as you want!

On Reddit if you try to bitch about something it's oh, no flames please. Bitching isn't allowed. It's offensive on Reddit. Plus it's really dumb at times. Something logical everyone does is held up and regaled as a marvelous new thing. I find myself reading it and it's like really? The people sound so young.

I love this gay site.

by Anonymousreply 60December 3, 2019 11:08 AM

That's not a cold hard fact, that's selection bias. You're claiming your personal experience over two small subreddits and the Trek subreddit is a cold hard fact... I mean, you sure SOUND like a typical Redditor, insisting that your opinion is fact because you can't bear to be disagreed with. You're completely missing that the rest of us are having a casual discussion about our opinions and experiences, and my experience is that I have not run into a single subreddit yet that wasn't full of nerdy, disaffected white guys being bitter about everything.

And every single subreddit you named is full of nerdy white guys, which the OP asked about. I merely added that my experience was that the nerdy white guys were also hateful.

I'm glad you... made a gay joke on the Trek subreddit and someone chuckled? I guess? But that doesn't mean Reddit isn't mainly for nerdy white guys, because it is. Who exactly do you think is on the Trek subreddit? And do you think that because you're gay, you're not a nerd?

by Anonymousreply 61December 3, 2019 11:33 AM

r61 For the love of gods, listen to yourself. There's no such thing as Reddit - it is a collection of subreddits that you either visit or you do not. You can't possibly have an experience with the entirety of Reddit as it's so huge.

[quote]And every single subreddit you named is full of nerdy white guys

You're demonstrably wrong. And I never said it's not full of them, I just said those weren't "mainly" composed of straight white guys, which is what the OP was asking about in the thread title. I'm not certain why you're now gaslighting my years of experience with those subreddits you yourself have zero experience with, in order to push your own argument. It's quite immature and not a good look on anyone.

[quote]And do you think that because you're gay, you're not a nerd?

Whut? Gurl, bye. 🙄

by Anonymousreply 62December 3, 2019 11:40 AM

r/lgbt is full of nerdy white straight guys in terrible wigs and tissue-stuffed bras high-fiving each other.

by Anonymousreply 63December 3, 2019 11:43 AM

OP didn't say anything about straight, though. Just "nerdy white guys."

by Anonymousreply 64December 3, 2019 12:01 PM

R61 you've spent too much time on Reddit, yourself. Everyone there writes like this:

"I'm glad you... made a gay joke on the Trek subreddit and someone chuckled? I guess?"

"... I mean, you sure SOUND like a typical Redditor"

That's a typical wishy-washy Reddit voice if there ever was one.

I always hear writing like that in the Panera Girl voice, with ukulele strumming background music or xylophone/claps accompaniment.

by Anonymousreply 65December 3, 2019 1:04 PM

Sorry R65, I'm rarely there. I've been typing like that since Usenet.

Dare I even look up what a Panera Girl is?

by Anonymousreply 66December 3, 2019 1:14 PM

R66, You've been prefacing your written statements with "I mean...." and ending them with "I guess?" for how many years?

by Anonymousreply 67December 3, 2019 1:55 PM

Going by the "Gone wild" subreddits, it is 100.0% nerdy white guys, labeling themselves as straight and desperate for some kind of validation of their dick's attractiveness.

The Datalounge subreddit is more like if Datalounge itself actually worked. You can actually down-vote people, hide their posts, report them, etc. It's funny how effectively it weeds out the trolls on here.

by Anonymousreply 71December 4, 2019 12:36 AM

"nerdy white guys". Let me guess, you're trans. You're a person of color. You're not getting the attention you feel entitled to on Reddit. You're simple-minded and can't keep up with the discussions on there because they're over your head. You're lashing out at folks on Reddit because you're a basic bitch yourself.
