Why won t my vanity lights turn on? ›

Check the connections at the switch and make sure that they are tight. Be sure that the power is off to the circuit that you are working on. With the power shut off, check the wire connections at the light fixture and at the breaker panel to make sure they are all connected tightly.

Bathroom Vanity Lights

How many lights? Most collections come with options of between two and five lights. Both the size of the mirror and the size of the room must be considered when determining which is best for your space. A smaller room will look best with a 2 light vanity light.

Most vanity lights can be mounted with lights pointed up or down. Remember to mount the fixture with the lights pointed up for ambient lighting and pointed down for task lighting.

Check the fixture's bulb to see if it's loose or has burned out. Tighten the bulb or replace it, as needed. Shut down the power to the circuit and then check the socket tab in the center of the socket. If it's flattened down, you may have to pull up on it a bit in order for it to make contact with the bulb.

Circuit Overload

Check you don't have too many appliances plugged into one power point. One of the common causes of lights not working is an overload of circuits. This happens when too many appliances are connected to one circuit, which means not enough current is available for each appliance or light fixture.

Place the vanity light bar 3 inches above the mirror for the most even illumination across your reflection. For a child's bathroom, keep the light at the standard height, but choose a wall-hung mirror that can be adjusted. The bathroom mirror height can be increased as they grow.

Cool white light, typically in the 4000K to 4500K range, closely resembles natural daylight. This makes it ideal for achieving accurate color representation and reducing shadows on your face.

The lights should be evenly spaced on either side of the mirror, at approximately eye level. Avoid placing the lights above the mirror, as this can cast unflattering shadows on the face. If space permits, consider installing additional vanity lights above the mirror or on the ceiling for overall ambient lighting.

Bulbs with a CRI rating of 80 to 100 are best for bathroom illumination. Most LED bulbs, for example, with a CRI rating of 80 to 90 produce a more natural output of bright light and can provide the best lighting for grooming.

There is a standard measurement — although you don't necessarily have to use it if there are other factors that might mean you'd choose a different height. Either way, the standard is to place vanity lights above mirrors at 75 inches to 80 inches from the floor to the center of the light fixture.

Update Vanity Lights

A tripped circuit breaker is the most likely cause of a bathroom light not working. To fix the problem go to your switchboard and locate the circuit breaker connected to the bathroom light.

The only way to know for sure is to inspect the light bulb within the fixture. Make sure your recessed lighting is switched off and the bulb itself is cool. Remove the bulb and inspect it for gray or black spots—this means it's blown. Simply replace the bulb and your recessed light should work as good as new.

Otherwise, ensure that your circuit is getting consistent power – if not, you may need to replace the wiring in your bathroom. Alternatively, you may need to replace your light fixture. If the fixture or its wiring appears burnt or overly loose – it's time for a new light fixture.

But there may be a deeper electrical issue behind the failed light—you may have a failed light fixture, bad wiring, a broken switch.
