  1. Great recipe and very easy - a good choice for my first ever crock pot dish! I admit I did tinker with the ingredients a little - it just isn't stroganoff for me without tomato paste, so I added a 135g (4.5oz?) tetrapack of the stuff at the beginning plus a large (14oz?) can of sliced mushrooms, mixed with everything else. I was skeptical about using frozen chicken, but it was sooo moist and tender after 6 hours (on Medium) it was unbelievable. I fork shredded the chicken and tossed it all back in the pot to heat through - AWESOME over fettucine!

  2. I've made this twice now and it is great! The first time I used full-fat ingredients and it was excellent. The second time I used 'Healthy Request' mushroom soup and low-fat sour cream and it was just as excellent! So- why not use the lower fat ingredients?!?I also cooked this for at least 10 hours with no loss of taste. The chicken fell apart- but I'm okay with that. Right before serving I boiled half a bag of "No-Yolks" egg noodles and just mixed the drained noodles directly into the crockpot. It wasn't as pretty but much easier to serve. Next time I may add some additional mushrooms because the little bits that are in the condensed soup really disappear in the cooked dish. This one is in heavy rotation in my meal cycle now. Easy to prepare and cheap ingredients. What's not to like?

  3. I only used half the amount of onion soup but was still a bit salty for me, tasted good other than the saltiness though.

  4. I founds this very salty, next time I'll definitely cut down on the onion soup mix. Other then that I loved how it was so easy to throw together.

  5. YUM! I have had many versions of stroganoff and this was super easy and enjoyed by all. I served over low carb pasta. Thanks!

Tweaks

  1. I've made this for dinner a couple of times now & we've all really enjoyed it. I've found the recipe to be really forgiving too, since I've never had a full 2 cups (16 oz) of sour cream on hand to use, & the first time I mistakenly opened cream of chicken soup instead. It all worked out great. My favourite part is that the meat goes in frozen! No planning & no rushing around right before dinner. Thank you.

Do you have to cook chicken before crockpot? ›

Is 4 hours on high the same as 8 hours on low in a slow cooker? ›

The difference between "High" and "Low" on slow cookers seems to differ with every brand and model. One thing that is consistent, though, is that food takes seven to eight hours to reach a simmer point (around 210°) on low; versus three to four hours on high.

Is 6 hours on low the same as 4 hours on high? ›

One hour on HIGH generally equals two hours on LOW.

Why is my chicken tough after cooking in crockpot? ›

Rubbery chicken is usually an indicator of overcooked chicken. The longer the chicken cooks, the more moisture it loses, and without moisture, the protein fibers become elastic, AKA rubbery.

Is 4 hours on high enough to cook chicken? ›

How do you slow cook chicken breast? Chicken breasts are a lean cut and the key to slow cooking them without drying them out involves the right amount of moisture. Add just enough liquid to come 1cm up the side of the bowl. Cover and cook on High for 2 ½-4 hours or on Low for 4-6 hours.

Is it okay to put raw chicken in a slow cooker? ›

Yes, you can put raw chicken in a slow cooker! Slow cookers and Crock-Pots are designed to cook raw meats. The direct heat from the pot, lengthy cooking time and steam created from the tightly covered container destroys bacteria, making slow cooking safe. You can put frozen chicken in a slow cooker, too!

How to know when crockpot chicken is done? ›

Cover and cook

Place the bird inside the slow cooker, cover, and turn the appliance on to the "high" setting. Cook until the chicken is cooked through and an instant-read thermometer inserted into the thickest part of the thigh (not touching bone) reads 160°F, around 2 1/2 to 3 hours.

Can I leave chicken in crockpot for 8 hours? ›

Cook the whole chicken

Keep the skin on (you can remove after cooking), add lots of herbs, layer the bottom of your crock with potatoes, carrots and onions, let it go unsupervised for 8 hours, and walk into a very nice weeknight version of the Sunday Roasted Chicken.

Why does chicken get watery in crockpot? ›

This moist environment allows you to leave food to cook for hours without risking it drying out. But because there is no evaporation, the liquid isn't able to reduce and thicken naturally in a slow cooker, often resulting in watery sauces and loose gravies.

Can you leave chicken in a slow cooker all night? ›

Most appliances will automatically shut off after 20 or so hours on this setting, but you shouldn't leave food in a slow cooker for an extended length of time. The general rule of thumb is that 2-4 hours is the maximum length of time you can leave food in a slow cooker on warm.

Does chicken need to be fully submerged in crockpot? ›

Water or liquid is necessary to create steam. When cooking meat or poultry, the water or liquid level should cover the ingredients to ensure effective heat transfer throughout the crock. Some manufacturers of slow cookers recommend adding liquid to fill the stoneware 1/2 to 3/4 full.

Does chicken get more tender the longer you slow cook it? ›

That is why tough meats become “fork tender” in the slow cooker. Chicken breasts have very little connective tissue; that means they can be cooked quickly because the long cooking time needed to soften connective tissue isn't necessary. They also have little fat, which means they can become dry if cooked too long.

Is 3 hours on high the same as 6 hours on low? ›

This means most recipes can be cooked on either setting. If a recipe calls for cooking on the HIGH setting for three hours, you can cook it for seven hours on the LOW setting instead. Or if a recipe calls for eight hours on HIGH, it can be cooked for up to 12 hours on LOW.

Can you cook chicken on low for 4 hours? ›

Cover and cook until the chicken is tender and registers an internal temperature of 165°F, 4 to 5 hours on the LOW setting, or 2 to 3 hours on the HIGH setting.

How do I keep chicken from drying out in the crockpot? ›

Using a nice, long, low-and-slow cook time helps chicken breasts retain plenty of moisture - but you can certainly opt to add a splash of water or chicken stock to the crockpot if you like!
